Foreign Minister meets the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan

Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Abdulla Shahid met with His Excellency Taro Kono, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan, in Tokyo today.

During the meeting, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Minister Shahid recalled his visit to Japan in 2007 to open the Embassy of the Maldives in Tokyo and Minister noted that it marked as a new era in the Maldives – Japan relations. Foreign Minister Kono warmly welcomed the Minister back to Japan and reaffirmed Tokyo’s commitment to further strengthen the historic and friendly relations between the two countries.

Discussions also ensued pertaining to furthering the cooperation between the two countries in areas relating to economic and social development. Foreign Minister Shahid also recognized and thanked the Government of Japan and its people for the continued support to the Maldives throughout its development journey, which is prominently featured across many areas, including fisheries, environment, education and disaster reduction.

Minister Shahid is on an official visit to Japan from 19-23 December 2018. The Minister is accompanied by the Minister of Finance His Excellency Ibrahim Ameer, and the Minister of Economic Development His Excellency Uz Fayyaz Ismail and officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of Maldives in Japan.
