Ms. Aishath Azeema

Ms. Aishath Azeema began her career in public service in the Maldives in 1988, shortly after completing her General Certificate of Education (GCE) O’ Levels. Ms. Azeema’s journey in the Maldives Foreign Service has been marked by a steadfast commitment to advancing the country’s foreign policy interests both domestically and internationally. She joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where she initially served as an English Secretary. Through diligence and dedication, she climbed the ranks, eventually achieving the distinguished title of Ambassador.

Throughout her extensive career, Ms. Azeema gained considerable experience across various departments within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Notably, she made significant contributions to the Department of External Resources and the Foreign Relations Department, playing a crucial role in several initiatives that shaped the diplomatic landscape of the Maldives.

Her participation in numerous seminars, workshops, and negotiations has been instrumental in representing the Maldives on many platforms related to the development goals of the Maldives. Ms. Azeema was a key member of the negotiation team for the Maldives’ first bilateral Free Trade Agreement, reflecting her expertise in trade diplomacy.

One of the highlights of Ms. Azeema’s career was her five-year tenure as Minister-Counsellor at the Embassy of the Republic of Maldives in India. In this role, she served as Head of Chancery, overseeing the Embassy’s operations and actively working to promote and strengthen bilateral relations between the Maldives and India. Upon returning to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in early 2014, Ms. Azeema took on the role of Joint Secretary in charge of the China and Japan Divisions. Her expertise was further recognized when she was appointed Additional Secretary, where she headed the India Division and the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Division. Ms. Azeema also served as Minister (Chargé d’affaires) at the Embassy of the Republic of Maldives in London. From 2019 to 2023. From June 2019 to September 2023 she held the prestigious position of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Maldives to China, where she played a critical role in enhancing diplomatic relations and cooperation between the two countries. On completion of her term as the Ambassador of Maldives to China, Ms. Azeema continued to influence the Maldives’ foreign policy and international relations, overseeing the India Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as an Additional Secretary.

Ms. Azeema was appointed as the High Commissioner Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Maldives to the Republic of India on 30 October 2024.

Ms. Azeema is married and has two daughters. Balancing her professional commitments with family life, she serves as a role model for many, demonstrating the importance of dedication to public service while nurturing personal relationships. Ms. Aishath Azeema’s extensive career in the Maldives Foreign Service showcases her commitment to her country and her expertise in diplomacy.
