The New Ambassador of Japan, Her Excellency Ms. Keiko Yanai, presented her Letter of Credence to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih at a ceremony held this morning at the President’s Office.

At the ceremony, the President congratulated Her Excellency on her ambassadorial appointment, and expressed confidence that the friendly relations that has marked bilateral ties between the Maldives and Japan will continue to prosper during her tenure.

The Ambassador of Pakistan to the Maldives His Excellency Vice Admiral Retd. Waseem Akram paid a courtesy call on President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih today. The meeting was held this afternoon at the President’s Office.

During the call, President Solih emphasized on the 52 years of long standing bilateral relations that exist between the Maldives and Pakistan and expressed gratitude to the Pakistani government for the continued support and assistance extended to the Maldives especially in the area of education. He further expressed hope to further solidify the ties between the two countries.

In this regard, the President and the Ambassador shed light on various segments where existing ties between the two countries could further strengthen, including trade, education and other areas of mutual benefit.

Speaking at the meeting the Pakistani Ambassador congratulated President Solih on his assumption of office and expressed hope to work together with the Government of Maldives.

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Ahmed Khaleel, met with the Senior Vice President of JICA, Dr Junichi Yamada, this afternoon in Tokyo.

During the meeting, the State Minister thanked JICA for the various development projects steered by JICA in Maldives that has lifted the lives and well being of Maldivians over the past few decades. The State Minister noted that JICA’s programs have enriched people-to-people contact between the two countries and brought much needed development assistance to the country. Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Abdulla Shahid, has departed Tokyo this evening, after concluding an official visit to Japan. During this visit, Minister Shahid was accompanied by the Minister of Finance, His Excellency Ibrahim Ameer, and the Minister of Economic Development, His Excellency Uz Fayyaz Ismail. The visit marks the first official visit by the administration to East Asia.

While in Tokyo, the Ministers paid a courtesy call on His Excellency Mr Taro Aso, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of Japan. Foreign Minister Shahid also met with his counterpart, His Excellency Taro Kono, the Foreign Minister of Japan. This is the fourth time that foreign ministers of the two countries have met over the past twelve months. During these meetings, discussions focused on ways of further strengthening the historic, close and friendly ties that have always existed between the Maldives and Japan, and exploring ways to further this relationship.

Minister Shahid also met with His Excellency Yoshiaki Harada, Minister of Environment, His Excellency Hiroshige Seko, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, the Governor of Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), the President of Japan External Trade Organisation and key business corporations in Japan. The Ministers briefed the Governor on the economic agenda of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, while reiterating Maldives’ commitment to embark on policies that are sustainable, environmentally friendly and allow for greater economic diversification.
