Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Asim met Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal, H.E. Mr. Augusto Santos Silva this afternoon. During this meeting both Ministers discussed ways of consolidating relations between the Maldives and Portugal, in bilateral and multilateral arena.

As co-facilitator of the United Nations Oceans Conference held in New York in June 2017, Minister Augusto described oceans, preservation of marine life and climate change as core areas, the Maldives and Portugal can collaborate in the multilateral arena.  Stating that the Portugal organizes Oceans Conferences every year, Minister Augusto mentioned, that as a Small Island Developing State, Maldives can share and gain experiences on how to address adverse effects of climate change, in such Conferences. Minister Asim described Maldives as one of the first countries to ratify Paris Agreement and stressed on the advocacy role Maldives plays as the Chair of Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS).

Minister Asim stressed on the Maldives’ achievements in the areas of fisheries, tourism and infrastructure. In this regard, both Ministers discussed ways in which Maldives and Portugal can collaborate in fisheries and tourism sectors.

Minister Asim and Minister Augusto both reiterated their commitment to work closely on bilateral issues of mutual interest and to work closely in international forums, as advocates of oceans and climate change.

The Maldives established diplomatic relations with the Portugal on 9 February 1995. This is the first official visit of Minister Asim to the Portugal since he assumed office. He was accompanied by Ms. Samahath Zuhuree, Assistant Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Government of Japan donated medical equipments worth 103 million Japanese Yen which is equivalent to approximately 14 million Maldivian Rufiyaa, to the Government of Maldives today.

The medical equipment would be utilized in regional hospitals and in selected health facilities of the Maldives.

The aid was presented to His Excellency Mr. Abdulla Nazim, Minister of Health by His Excellency Mr. Kazumi Endo, Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives at a handing over ceremony held at the Ministry of Health this morning. The medical equipment is donated under Japanese Non-Project Grant Aid.

This year we marks the fiftieth anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic ties between the Maldives and Japan. Japan has been one of the biggest bilateral development partners of the Maldives.

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom met with the Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and the Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, this afternoon. The meeting was held at the Ruler’s Court, Dubai.

During the meeting, the leaders discussed lasting diplomatic relations and longstanding cooperation between the two countries, while expressing hope for continued growth and diversification in relations between the Maldives and UAE.

Moreover, leaders of both countries discussed about challenges Maldives is facing due to climate change, and touched on the need for mutual and global collaboration in the efforts against terrorism.

President Yameen is on a 3-day official visit to the United Arab Emirates where he will meet key leaders in order to further strengthen and diversify trade, increase technical and financial assistance, and further accelerate socioeconomic ties between the UAE and the Maldives.

Four very important agreements were signed today between the Governments of Maldives and United Arab Emirates. The ceremony was held at the Ruler’s Court, Dubai this afternoon.

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum witnessed today’s signing ceremony.

 

The agreements signed today are as follows:
1. Agreement between the Government of Maldives and the Government of United Arab Emirates for the Avoidance of Double taxation and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with respect to Taxes on Income and Capital
2. MoU between the Government of Maldives and the Government of United Arab Emirates on Mutual Exemption of Entry Visas for holders of Diplomatic Passports
3. Agreement between the Government of Maldives and the Government of United Arab Emirates on the Promotion and Reciprocal Protection of Investments
4. Loan Agreement between the Government of Maldives and Abu Dhabi Fund for Development to Finance Ibrahim Nasir International Airport Project
President Yameen is on a 3-day official visit to the United Arab Emirates where he will meet key leaders in order to further strengthen and diversify trade, increase technical and financial assistance, and further accelerate socioeconomic ties between the UAE and the Maldives.

The President of Maldives His Excellency Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and First Lady Madam Fathimath Ibrahim is on a 3-day Official visit to the United Arab Emirates on special invitation from His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates and the Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
