Minister of Foreign Affairs His Excellency Abdulla Shahid has departed to Tokyo, Japan, today on his first official visit to Japan since assuming office.

During this visit, Minister Shahid will meet with His Excellency Taro Kono, Minister of Foreign Affairs and other high level officials of the Government of Japan, and hold discussion on further strengthening the historic and close bilateral ties between the Maldives and Japan. Read more

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that the slowly fading Indo-Maldives relations have been revitalized and further solidified following the State Visit made to India, on invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He made this remark while speaking at a Press Conference held at the President’s Office this afternoon to brief the local media on the highlights of the State Visit.

Speaking at the Press Conference, President underscored that during the State Visit, Indian government agreed to provide leniency in facilitating visa arrangements for Maldivian citizens travelling to India for education, tourism and medical purposes. He further stated that this would enable many Maldivians who send their children to school in India, to be able to accompany them and that the agreement would also facilitate easier visa access for Maldivian citizens and their families, who travel to India for medical treatment. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and First Lady Fazna Ahmed have toured Taj Mahal as part of the current State Visit being made to India. The President and First Lady arrived in Agra this morning.
President Solih and First Lady’s State Visit is being made on the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

President Solih and First Lady were officially welcomed on the State Visit at a ceremony held on Monday, at the Presidential Palace Rashtrapati Bhavan. President Solih and the First Lady were officially received during the ceremonial welcome by Indian President Ram Nath Kovind, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

As part of the State Visit, President Solih and Prime Minister Modi led the official talks between the government of Maldives and the government of India. Four key documents were also exchanged between the two governments as part of the State Visit.

Later on Monday evening, President Solih met with the President of India, and held discussions to further solidify the existing bilateral relations between the Maldives and India. Further, Indian Vice President and the Minister of External Affairs of India paid courtesy calls on President Solih.

President Solih and First Lady were hosted at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, as special guests of the Indian President Ram Nath Kovind.
