The Government of Maldives does not agree with the Opinion formulated on 20 January 2017, and published on 26 January, by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) on the Submission made by the Col (Rtd) Mohamed Nazim. Col (Rtd) Nazim was sentenced on 26 March 2015 by the Criminal Court for 11 years imprisonment for illegal possession of firearms.

Male’, 22 December 2016

Today marks the 84th anniversary of the establishment of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. On 22 December 1932, the then Sultan of the Maldives appointed the Al Ameer Hassan Fareed Didi as the country’s first Foreign Minister (Wazeerul Kharijiyya). Since then, the Foreign Ministry has undergone numerous structural and name changes. The institutional name was last changed to Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 10 November 1982. The current Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Asim was appointed on 13 July 2016.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohamed Asim has said that “international cooperation is the most important mechanism to counter terrorism and violent extremism”. The Minister made this remark following the international seminar on “Counter Terrorism and Violent Extremism: Challenges and Solutions through Shared Experiences” that concluded today. The Seminar, which was held from 25-26 October 2016 in Kurumba Maldives, was organized by the National Counter Terrorism Centre of the Maldives, in association with United Nations, UN Women, and the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI).

Ambassador H.E. Ahmed Mohamed met Mr. C.K. Nayal, member of the Press Council of India today at the Embassy of Maldives. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the participation of Maldives Media Council in the celebration of Golden Jubilee of the National Press Day of India on 16 November 2016.

Mr. Nayak appraised Ambassador Ahmed on the programme for the day, which will include discussion on the formation of the South Asia Alliance of Press Councils. This event is going to continue for two days.
