The Chief Justice of the Maldives Honourable Justice Uz. Abdullah Saeed arrived in New Delhi this evening on an official bilateral visit. The Chief Justice and the accompanying delegation was received at New Delhi airport by Ambassador H.E. Ahmed Mohamed and other diplomats from the Maldives Embassy.

During this visit the Chief Justice of the Maldives will meet and hold discussions with the Chief Justice of India Honourable Mr. Justice T.S. Thakur and some of the senior most Honourable Justices from the Supreme Court of India.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Asim has sent a message of condolence to the Minister of External Affairs of the Republic of India, Her Excellency Ms. Sushma Swaraj, following the fire incident at Sum Hospital Bubaneshwar on Monday, 17 October 2016, which has caused the loss of many lives and injured many more.

Ambassador H.E. Ahmed Mohamed met the Chairman of New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), Shri Naresh Kumar at NDMC today. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss and seek guidance on the processes and procedures to obtain building permission for the design concept and drawings prepared for the chancery of the Embassy of the Republic of Maldives in New Delhi, India. 

A plot of land from the Chanakyapuri area of New Delhi was allotted by India to Maldives in 2013. The Chanakyapuri area is the main diplomatic enclave of New Delhi.

The design consultants and the project lawyer also participated in the meeting.

The Government of Maldives congratulates and warmly welcomes Mr. Antonio Guterres on his confirmation as the next Secretary General of the United Nations. As a country which looks upon the United Nations as the guarantor of international peace and security, the Maldives stands ready to extend its support and looks forward to working with Mr. Guterres as he gets ready for the assignment as the new Secretary General.

The Government of Maldives has decided today to leave the Commonwealth. The decision to leave the Commonwealth was difficult, but inevitable.

The Maldives joined the Commonwealth in 1982 with high hopes and expectations, convinced that the organisation will be an arena for coordinating critical issues that the member States, in particular, the smallest members of the organisation face.
