Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia at the Bureau for South and Central Asian Affairs of the United States Department of State, Mr. David Ranz, called on the Foreign Minister, His Excellency Abdulla Shahid, today.

At the meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this morning, the Minister and Deputy Secretary of State discussed about enhancing cooperation between both countries on potential priority areas such as public financial management, rule of law, human rights and good governance. Read more

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the Commander-in-Chief of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), has appointed Major General Abdulla Shamaal as the Chief of Defence Force.

The ceremony to present the letter of appointment was held this evening at the President’s Office. The appointment was made at the level of State Minister.

The President has also appointed Brigadier General Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef as the Vice Chief of Defence Force.

The appointment was made at the level of Deputy Minister.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has today appointed Ahmed Numan as the Commissioner General of Customs. The presentation of Letter of Appointment was held this afternoon at the President’s Office.

The new Commissioner General of Customs took oath of service as a customs officer, before the Supreme Court Judge, Hon. Uz. Abdulla Areef.

The appointment was made at the level of Minister.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has today launched the National Cleaning Exercise, as pledged in his “First 100 Days Goals”, by clearing the garbage around the Maafannu Stadium.

Vice President Faisal Naseem, Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, senior delegates of the Government, and those representing NGOs and the private sector were also among the high number of participants at today’s event.

Delivering his remarks at the launching event, President Solih appealed to everyone to contribute to this national campaign and take on their personal responsibility of keeping the Maldives clean. He pointed out that our household waste mostly consists of single-use plastic than organic waste, and urged everyone to strive to eliminate single-use plastic from their daily lives. Read more

His Excellency Mr. Abdulla Shahid signs the book of condolence opened at the American Center in Male’ today, to pay the last respects to President George H. W. Bush.

The minister’s message reads as follows:

“I would like to express my deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of the United Sates, and especially the bereaved family of President George H.W. Bush.

President Bush was an international statesman of exceptional standing who served his country and the world with valor and honor. He was a man of high principles and uncompromising integrity who steered the US and the world through the turbulent times in the aftermath of the Cold War with remarkable diplomacy and visionary wisdom. History will undoubtedly remember the late President as one of the greatest leaders of the United States. Read more
