President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has today met with Former President Uz. Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. The meeting was held at the President’s Office.

Speaking at the meeting, Former President Gayoom congratulated President Solih on his assumption of office on behalf of the Maumoon Reform Movement. He also assured President Solih of the Movement’s full cooperation and support for the current administration.

Discussions were held on the endeavors currently being undertaken by President Solih’s administration.

The Ambassador of China to the Maldives, His Excellency Zhang Lizhong called on the Minister of Foreign Affairs His Excellency Abdulla Shahid, today, at the Ministry.

In the meeting, Ambassador Zhang thanked the Government of Maldives for the warm welcome and gracious hospitality provided to His Excellency Mr. Luo Shugang, Minister of Culture and Tourism of China, and Special Envoy of the President of China; who visited the Maldives from 16 – 18 November 2018, to attend the inauguration ceremony of His Excellency President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

The Ambassador further noted that the Special Envoy and President Solih had a fruitful discussion, during Mr. Luo’s courtesy call on President Solih on 18 November 2018. Read more

The Ambassador of India to the Maldives His Excellency Akilesh Mishra called on Minister of Foreign Affairs His Excellency Abdulla Shahid today, at the Ministry.

In the meeting, Ambassador Mishra thanked the Government and people of the Maldives, for the warm hospitality extended to Prime Minister Modi, during his visit to the Maldives to attend the inauguration ceremony of His Excellency President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

At the meeting, Minister Shahid and Ambassador Mishra discussed the implementation and progress of ongoing projects between the two countries, as well as future cooperation in areas of mutual importance. Following recommendations from the Cabinet, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has decided for the Maldives to participate in the Commonwealth of Nations again. The meeting of the Cabinet was held today.

During the Cabinet meeting, Ministers underscored the advantages of being a Commonwealth member, particularly noting that it would open up several opportunities to the Maldivian people, especially for the youth. In this regard, Ministers discussed the facilitation of education scholarships and the vast opportunities for Maldivians athletes to perform internationally.

Moreover, the Cabinet Ministers noted the importance of Maldives being a member of the Commonwealth, especially in keeping in line with other members of the international community with regard to upholding and promoting human rights, freedom of expression, and democracy. Furthermore, the Ministers highlighted the importance of promoting sustainable development while ensuring environmental protection. Read more

Following discussions at the first Cabinet meeting held today, the Cabinet has decided to initiate the implementation of the First 100 Days’ Goals set by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. The decision was made following discussions on the papers detailing the First 100 Days’ programme.

Discussions were also held on the rapid assessments conducted by the transition office, to determine the current status of government institutions. Members deliberated on the current budget and forecasted budget set for the operation of Ministries and State enterprises, and the rules and regulations set for the institutions.

Moreover, discussions were held on the special programmes currently being undertaken by the government institutions and those planned for the future, and national level programmes being conducted by the institutions. The Cabinet also discussed extensively, on ways to resolve the challenges highlighted in the findings of the transitional committees.
