President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has appealed to all Maldivians to work together with the aim of sustaining the progress of the tourism industry in the Maldives. The President made this appeal in his address issued on the occasion of World Tourism Day 2018.

Highlighting this year’s theme for World Tourism Day; “Tourism and the Digital Transformation” President Yameen emphasized that this transformation has undoubtedly brought numerous remarkable developments to the Maldivian tourism industry during the past five years.

In his address, President Yameen underscored that he was extremely pleased with the innovative developments brought to the tourism sector during his administration. Moreover, the President shed light on the successfully completed developmental projects carried out by this administration in different areas of the Maldives which includes,  4 domestic airports, 7 hotels, 35 new resorts, and 495 guest houses.

President Yameen also underlined that every advancement of the tourism industry is beneficial to the people, as it surges the job opportunities, bringing numerous developments to the islands, and increasing the income of Maldivian families. Furthermore, the President also called upon the people to work together in order to bring vast developments to the tourism industry of the Maldives.

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has, while accepting the provisional results by the Elections Commission, conceded the 2018 Presidential Election to President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

While addressing the nation this afternoon, the President noted that he would continue to serve until the end of the current Presidential term and work to ensure a smooth transition in the interim.

The President touched on some of the transformational development milestones achieved during his term and expressed gratitude toward everyone who contributed to his vision.  He noted that he had consistently worked toward the socio-economic growth of the nation and that he hoped to continue service to community and country.

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, during his address, also conveyed his sincere congratulations to President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

The Elections Commission of Maldives has announced provisional results of the elections to elect the President of the Maldives, for the next five years. Candidate of the Maldivian Democratic Party, Member of Parliament Honourable Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, won the election, having received 134,616 votes.

Candidate of the Progressive Party of the Maldives, incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdulla Gayoom, received 96,132 votes.

Of 262,135 eligible voters in this election, 233,877 voters cast their votes at the 472 ballot boxes placed in the Maldives and in four countries abroad. This is a voter turnout of 89.22 percent.

Voting proceeded smoothly, and peacefully, with no reported incidents. No major issues were reported in the vote counting process as well as with the voters list, which will affect the results.

Voting took place in the presence of a record number of representatives of candidates, observers and monitors. 945 representatives of candidates, 2610 local observers and international observers from 11 agencies, and 3329 local monitors and a number of international monitors are active in the election.

Official results will be announced within the next seven days, before 30 September 2018.

This was the third Presidential election held in the Maldives, following the adoption of the 2008 Constitution, which paved the way for multi-party democracy in the Maldives. The President and Vice-President, elected today, are expected to* be sworn in on 17 November 2018.

 

PRESIDENTIAL VISITS

Visit to Addu City and Fuvammulah City

  • President Yameen concluded his visit to Addu City and Fuvahmulah City on 15th September.
  • During his visit, the President visited Hulhumeedhoo of Addu City and initiated sewerage services and water services of the city.He also inaugurated housing units and the Addu Fisheries Complex, and marked the completion of the shore protection project of Hulhumeedhoo.
  • President also visited Hithadhoo and inaugurated sewerage services, housing units, nature park, and solar hybrid power system of the city.
  • He later visited Feydhoo and inaugurated water services of Feydhoo, Maradhoo, and Maradhoo-Feydhoo, and marked the completion of a land reclamation project in Feydhoo.
  • The President also visited Fuvammulah City and initiated sewerage services and water services, inaugurated housing units and Nature Park, and marked the completion of the harbor revetment project.
  • President also met the people of Maradhoo and Maradhoofeydhoo during his visit.

The Presidential Election to be open to International Observers and Monitors

  • The Elections Commission stated that 38 delegates from 11 International Organisations will be present as International Observers at the upcoming Presidential Election.
  • It will include representatives from the Elections Commissions of Sri Lanka, The Philippines, Romania, Thailand, Malaysia, Palestine, Hungary, as well as from the Organisation for Islamic Cooperation, All Party British Parliamentary Group, the Alliance of Conservatives and Reformists in Europe, and the Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL).
  • Media representatives from 14 media groups will also monitor the election.

Maldives ranks 6 among most visited countries per capita

  • According to a recent survey by TravelMag.com, Maldives ranks sixth amongst the most visited country per capita in the world.
  • The survey took annual visitor numbers of countries against the size of their respective populations to arrive at these results.
  • Maldives is ranked sixth with 3,200 annual visitors per capita.

Maldives wins 3 prestigious titles at SATA 2018

  • Maldives earned Leading Honeymoon Destination, Leading Beach Destination, and Leading Diving Destination at the GALA Retreat of SATA Awards.
  • The awards took place on 16th September at The Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai, India.
  • The Ambassador of Maldives to India Honorable Ahmed Mohamed received the awards on behalf of the destination.
  • Over 450 nominations from Bhutan, Maldives, Sri Lanka, India and Nepal were submitted for this year’s edition.
  • The nominees competed in 36 major categories in 10 different segments.
