In a statement released today, the Elections Commission has stated that 38 delegates from 11 International Organisations will act as International Observers at the upcoming Presidential Election to be held on the 23rd of September 2018. This includes representatives from the Elections Commissions of Sri Lanka, The Philippines, Romania, Thailand, Malaysia, Palestine, Hungary, as well as from the Organisation for Islamic Cooperation, All Party British Parliamentary Group, the Alliance of Conservatives and Reformists in Europe, and the Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL).

Media representatives from 14 media organisations will also be monitoring the election.

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has called upon everyone to focus on development and avoid creating turmoil in the country. The President made this remark while addressing the gathering at the function organised by Progressive Party of Maldives this evening. The President was accompanied by First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim.

In his speech, President Yameen noted that allowing for disruptions within the society and inviting outsiders to interfere with our internal affairs will lead to nothing but regression.

Highlighting the successful accomplishment of his electoral pledges so far, President Yameen stated that this administration has achieved his pledge of making female members at least 20% of the boards of directors of State companies. He also announced plans to increase this membership of women to 50%, during the next 5 years.

Speaking at the function, President Yameen highlighted the challenges faced in ensuring basic necessities for the people across the country. He underscored the many milestones this administration has achieved in this area, despite all the setbacks.

In this regard, President Yameen noted that during this administration 130 harbours have been developed across the country, easing travel for the people; sewerage services has been established for 75% of the country’s population; pharmacies have been established in every inhabited island; and 12 airport development projects have been undertaken so far. President Yameen also pledged to cut down the charges of basic utility services such as water and electricity in the next 5 years.

President Yameen emphasized that the main priority of his administration is to bring infrastructural development and building cities in all parts of the country. He also underlined the remarkable milestone achieved today, with the inauguration of the new Code F runway at the Velana International Airport, realizing the dreams of all Maldivians.

Furthermore, President Yameen reiterated this administration’s commitment to fulfilling the needs of the youth, and reassured of his continued efforts towards youth empowerment.

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has stated that today the Maldives boasts the highest standard of runways in this region. The President made this remark while speaking at the inaugurations of the new Code F runway at the Velana International Airport (VIA).

In his speech, the President noted that the completion of this new runway is a proud milestone for all Maldivians. The President also praised the pilot who captained the first A380 flight that landed at VIA, saying that he has proven the capability of Maldivian youth to the world. In this regard, the President reiterated this administration’s commitment to continued support for the growth and progress of youth.

Highlighting the importance of the airport development project, President Yameen noted that the country’s economy centers around the airport today, and that the new runway is proof of what the Maldives has achieved economically. President Yameen further said that with today’s economic growth, outsiders will not attack the freedom of our country. He said that his vision is to make the Maldives a self-sustained country, and to bring progress to the country and its citizens.

Commending the hard work of the Maldives’ National Football Team, President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has stated that winning the SAFF Suzuki Cup 2018 has proven that relentless determination and motivation will lead the way to victory.

The President made this statement while welcoming the national football team today, at the inauguration of the new Code F runway developed at the Velana International Airport (VIA).

In his speech, President Yameen expressed his gratitude to the national football team for making the whole nation proud and upholding the country’s good reputation.

In this regard, the President highlighted that the football team has proven to the world that despite our small size, the Maldives is able to keep up with the advancements of the world. He also reiterated his commitment to facilitating and empowering youth in every way.

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim have welcomed the Maldives’ National Football Team on arrival at the Velana International Airport. The Maldivian team won the SAFF Suzuki Cup 2018, held in Bangladesh from 4th to 15th September.

The Maldives’ National Football Team arrived on the first A380 flight that landed at the Velana International Airport, following the inauguration of the new Code F runway.

During the ceremony, the Captain of the Maldives’ National Football Team Akram Abdul Ghanee presented the champion’s trophy to President Yameen.

The President was accompanied by the First Lady, Cabinet Ministers, Parliament members, and senior officials of the government.
