President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has sent a message of condolence to the Prime Minister of Japan, His Excellency Shinzo Abe, following the Typhoon Jebi and the strong earthquake that struck, Japan’s Hokkaido, resulting in the tragic loss of lives and extensive damage to property and infrastructure.

The President’s message reads as follows:

“It was with profound sadness that I heard the news of the tragic loss of lives and extensive damage to property and infrastructure caused by Typhoon Jebi, and the strong earthquake which struck Hokkaido this morning.

At this time of national sorrow, I would like to assure Your Excellency, our firm solidarity with the Government and people of Japan, as a close bilateral partner and a friend. I pray for strength and fortitude for the Japanese people in overcoming this calamity, smooth running of the rescue and recovery operations, and a speedy recovery for the injured.

Please also convey our sincere condolences to the members of the bereaved families”.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a multi-sectoral consultations with the Government stakeholders in the implementation of the Programme of Action adopted by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) for the years 2015-2025.

The OIC-2025: Programme of Action was developed on the basis of the vision and principles as enshrined in the Charter of the OIC and manifests a renewed commitment by the OIC Member States, all institutions in the OIC system, international partners and other stakeholders in working together for a better tomorrow. The purpose of today’s consultation was to provide an interactive dialogue with the key stakeholders on the activities to be carried out in the implementation of the goals of Programme of Action.

The Maldives became a member of OIC in 1976, a few years after its inception. The Maldives is fully committed in upholding the principles of the Charter of the Organisation and has been contributing immensely towards the unity and solidarity of the Islamic Ummah.

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has stated that the people’s hopes and aspirations are formulated as a result of their own work, and that the development the country sees today is the result of that hope. The President made this remark while speaking at the function held this morning to meet the people of Kudahuvadhoo Island, South Nilandhe Atoll.

Speaking in this regard, the President underscored the development projects carried out in the country and briefed about future development plans. In this regard, President Yameen emphasized the innovative developmental projects carried out in the educational sector of Maldives. He stated that providing tablets for students, which would replace text books in the future, was part of the administration’s efforts for innovative means of progress in the sector.

Further, the President called upon the people to stand up together in order to protect our sovereignty, unique culture, religion and patriotism.

President Yameen is currently on a two-day visit to some islands of Ari Atoll and South Nilandhe Atoll.

Prior to visiting Kudahuvadhoo Island, the President visited Dhangethi Island yesterday and inaugurated the island’s harbor and initiated the clean water services. He also visited Mahibadhoo Island to mark the completion of road development project in the Island and visited Maamigili Island this morning and inaugurated the island’s sewerage system.

As part of this two-day tour, President Yameen visited Mathiveri Island and Thoddoo Island and met the people of both Islands.
