President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has arrived in Kudahuvadhoo Island of South Nilandhe Atoll this morning, as part of his current visit to some islands of Ari Atoll and South Nilandhe Atoll.

Upon arrival, the President was warmly welcomed by the island’s community.

Prior to visiting Kudahuvadhoo Island, the President visited Maamigili Island and inaugurated the sewerage system in the island.

As part of this two-day tour, President Yameen visited Dhangethi Island yesterday and inaugurated the island’s harbor and initiated the clean water services. He also visited Mahibadhoo Island to mark the completion of road development project in the Island.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Asim has sent a letter of congratulations to Her Excellency Ms. Michelle Bachelet, on assuming her new post as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. In his letter, Minister Asim reiterated the importance of dialogue and constructive engagement between Member States and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

He reassured that the Maldives would always remain ready to consult and engage with the Office, both at the Human Rights Council and domestically, on important matters relating to the promotion and protection of human rights. Minister Asim highlighted the huge strides the Maldives has taken in the area of empowerment of women, gender equality, rights of the child, and rights of persons with disabilities.

He reassured the new High Commissioner, that the Government of Maldives would continue to engage with the Council, and its mechanisms and procedures including the Universal Period Review process. He also noted that the Government has in the past welcomed teams from OHCHR to visit the Maldives, with a view to strengthening the domestic processes and enhancing capacity building of institutions, and in this regard, the Government would remain engaged with her Office in the promotion and protection of human rights.

H.E. Ms. Michelle Bachelet assumed her new post on 1 September 2018, after the end of tenure of her predecessor, H.E. Mr. Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussain.

Previously, Ms. Bachelet had served as the President of Chile from 2006 to 2010, and for a second time from 2014 to 2018. She had also served as the Executive Director at UN-Women from 2010 to 2013.

Highlighting the fact that every community desires development President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has stated that we must all work together and prioritize the development we need. The President made this remark while speaking at the function held this morning to inaugurate the sewerage service system in Maamigili Island, South Ari Atoll.

Speaking in this regard, the President highlighted the groundbreaking progress that this administration has brought to the nation in the past 5 years. He especially underscored the development projects carried out in the islands and briefed about future development plans.

In this regard, the President stated that upgrading the Maamigili Hospital, establishing a branch of the Bank of Maldives in Maamigili, and constructing the island’s roads were all part of his plans for the future of the island.

Further, the President called upon the people to stop working against progress, and to reflect on the benefits gained from every development project.

At the ceremony, President Yameen unveiled the monument placed to commemorate the inauguration of the project.

Noting the long-term benefits of the Sina-Male´ Bridge, President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has stated that the bridge is a national heritage belonging to the Maldivian people. The President made this remark while speaking at the function held this evening in Thoddoo Island, North Ari Atoll, as part of his visit to the island.

Speaking at the function, President Yameen noted that this administration has always prioritised serving the nation and its people. He especially highlighted the many milestones achieved by this administration in the education sector, and underscored that over 95 percent of students completing their higher education are on government aid.

Speaking at the ceremony, the President reiterated his belief that the youth is the country’s future. In this regard, he noted the importance of aiding the youth to accomplish their dreams.

President Yameen is currently on a two-day visit to some islands of North and South Ari Atoll and South Nilandhe Atoll.

Prior to visiting Thoddoo Island, the President visited Mathiveri Island and met the people of the Island.
