President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has inaugurated the Lhaviyani Atoll Hospital building and the harbor of Naifaru Island of Faadhippolhu Atoll this evening.

During the ceremony, President Yameen unveiled the monument placed to commemorate the completion of both projects.

The harbour of Naifairu Island is 1600 feet long and 300 feet wide.

President Yameen is currently on a two-day visit to islands of Faadhippolhu Atoll.

During this visit, President Yameen is also scheduled to visit Hinnavaru Island meet the people of the Island.

As part of this tour, the President is scheduled to mark the completion of shore protection project in Kurendhoo Island. He is also scheduled to visit Olhuvelifushi Island as part of this tour.

Upon arrival, the President was warmly welcomed by the island’s community.

During this tour, the President is scheduled to visit Naifaru Island to inaugurate the Lhaviyani Atoll Hospital building and the island’s harbor.

Moreover, the President is also scheduled to mark the completion of the shore protection project in Kurendhoo Island.

President Yameen is also scheduled to visit Hinnavaru Island, and Olhuvelifushi Island as part of this tour.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Asim hosted a luncheon in honour of His Excellency Mr. Wang Xiaotao, Representative of the Chinese Government and Chairman of the China International Development Cooperation Agency at Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa today.

During the luncheon, Minister Asim thanked the Government of China for the generous assistance provided for the construction of China Maldives Friendship Bridge. Noting the historical relationship between the Maldives and China, Foreign Minister Asim also said that China is one of the most important development partners for the Maldives. Minister Asim also highlighted some of the ongoing projects under the assistance of Chinese Government.

Both the Minister and the Representative from the Chinese Government expressed confidence that the Maldives and China will continue working together both bilaterally and internationally on issues of mutual concern, to enhance the existing ties of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

Mr. Wang Xiaotao is on an official visit to the Maldives to attend the opening ceremony of the China Maldives friendship Bridge, which is scheduled to take place on 30 August 2018.

The Representative of the Chinese Government and the Head of the International Development Cooperation Agency of Cihna, His Excellency Wang Xiaotao paid a courtesy call on the President of Maldives His Excellency Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, at the President’s Office this morning.

During the call, the President conveyed warm greeting and best wishes to the President of China, His Excellency Xi Jinping and welcomed the Chinese delegation to the Maldives. Highlighting that the Sina-Male’ bridge will be inaugurated this evening, the President stated that the bridge reflects the aspirations of the Maldivian people, especially the youth. In this regard, President Yameen expressed his sincere gratitude and deep appreciation to the President and the people of China for their tremendous support in realising this dream.

The President also highlighted the warm and long-lasting bonds of friendship between China and the Maldives, noting that it sets a great example of a relationship between larger and smaller countries. President Yameen also underscored that the Sino-Maldives partnership is mutually beneficial to both countries, and expressed his ardent desire to further reinvigorate and diversify the close bonds of friendship.

During the call Mr. Wang Xiaotao conveyed greetings from the Chinese President to President Yameen. Noting the high regard President Xi Jinping accords to the Sina-Male’ bridge, Mr. Wang Xiaotao expressed his gratitude for the invitation to be part of the historic event. He also conveyed his appreciation for the Maldivian people’s sentiments towards the Sina-Male´ bridge.

Mr. Wang Xiaotao also assured the President of China’s continuous support and contribution towards the social and economic development of the Maldives. He also wished success to the President for the upcoming Presidential election.

President Yameen was accompanied at the meeting by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Asim, the Minister of Housing and Infrastructure, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the Minister of State for Foreign Relations at the President’s Office, H.E. Mohamed Naseer and the Maldivian Ambassador to China, H.E. Mohamed Faisal.

Maldives Immigration has said that business visas will be required to observe, monitor or cover September’s Presidential elections.

In a notice issued on 29th August, Immigration has said that visas will be issued to only those who hold authorization from the Elections Commission. According to the notification observing, monitoring or covering the election on a tourist visa will be deemed as a punishable offence under Maldivian laws.

The last date for EC authorization and business visas will be September 15. Applications are currently open. The applicants will be required to provide all paperwork related to their traveling, business visa and documents for authorization.
