Vice President Abdulla Jihad has launched the fourth Maldives Investment Forum (MIF 2017), at a ceremony held at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

The 2017 Maldives Investment Forum is set to bring together and network prospective investors from the Middle East, especially from the UAE, and companies from the Maldives – general investment potential, as well as scope to explore ‘investment ready’ projects, between investor and companies, are expected to take place in addition to showcasing current, past and success stories.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Economic Development of Maldives Mohamed Saeed stated that the successive convening of Maldives Investment Forum in major cities across the globe was a testament to the pro-business and investor-friendly policies of President Yameen. He further invited and welcomed investments in many sectors, including finance, tourism, renewable energy, housing, real estate, logistics, education, and healthcare.

Along with Vice President Jihad, Minister of Economy of UAE H.E. Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansoori, Minister of Economic Development of Maldives Mohamed Saeed, and senior officials from the Maldives and UAE participated in the event.

The Maldives Investment Forum is an annual event targeted at encouraging investment, focused on foreign investment, in the Maldives – the event is a direct result of President Yameen’s drive towards a transformative shift in the Maldives’ economic growth through continued innovation and investment.

The Maldives participated in the UNODC Regional Programme for South Asia (2018-2021) in New Delhi on 18th December 2017.  The Maldivian delegation, led by the Prosecutor General of Maldives Uz. Aishath Bisham comprised of :

The UNODC Regional Office for South Asia (UNODC ROSA) is located in New Delhi, India and covers Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka. It works with the six Governments of South Asia through technical cooperation projects to address threats posed by drugs, crime, terrorism and corruption. In line with its mandates, UNODC promotes justice, health and security in the South Asia region.

The new Non-Resident Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to the Republic of Maldives, H.E. Hussein EL Saharty presented his credentials to President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom‎, this morning, at the President’s Office.‎

The President welcomed the Ambassador to the Maldives during the talks that followed and congratulated him on the commencement of his term. He noted that the Maldives and Egypt have a long history of diplomatic relations and this year will mark the 29th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Egypt. The President emphasized that the Government and the people of the Maldives highly values the close ties with Egypt, and noted with appreciation that Egypt has always been a dear friend to the Maldives.

Speaking of the prominent role that Egypt has continued to play in the education sector in the Maldives, the President noted that a large number of students are currently completing their studies in Al-Azhar University in Egypt. The President highlighted that Maldives wishes to seek more scholarship opportunities for a growing number of Maldivian students who aspire to enroll in Al-Azhar University.

The President further requested the Ambassador for the support of Egypt for Maldives’ inaugural candidature to the United Nations Security Council as a non-permanent member, for the term 2019- 2020. In this connection, the President mentioned that every country should have an equal opportunity to serve in all organs of the United Nations, and that Maldives has been playing a significant role in attracting global attention to international issues, particularly the consequences of global warming and sea level rising.

In closing, the President expressed hope and confidence that the fraternal relations between the Maldives and Egypt will continue to flourish in the years ahead.

The Ambassador conveyed good wishes from the President of Egypt, H.E. Abdel Fattah Al Sisi and Prime Minister, H.E. Sherif Ismail. He also conveyed assurances of his commitment to bolster the existing ties between Egypt and the Maldives during his ambassadorial tenure.

The President was accompanied at the ceremony by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Asim and the Minister of State for Foreign Relations at the President’s Office, H.E. Mohamed Naseer.

The Non-Resident Ambassador of the Kingdom of Thailand to the Republic of Maldives, Her Excellency Chulamanee Chartsuwan, presented her Letter of Credence to President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, this morning, at the President’s Office.

During the call, the President conveyed greetings and good wishes to the King of Thailand, His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Prime Minister, H.E. Prayuth Chan-ocha. He iterated that the Government of Maldives is firmly committed to cultivate and maintain the long-standing relations between the Maldives and Thailand. Discussions mainly revolved around exploring avenues to further promote Thai investments in the Maldives.

The Ambassador thanked the President for his keenness to seek more Thai investments in the Maldives, and assured his sound resolve to facilitate in his ambassadorial capacity on this front.

Ambassador H.E Ahmed Mohammed met with the High Commissioner of Ghanna, H.E. Michael Oquaye Esq. at the High Commission of Ghana in New Delhi today.

At the meeting, both the dignitaries discussed bilateral issues of mutual interest and ways to further strengthen the relationship between the two countries.
