The new non-resident Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Maldives, His Excellency Yury Materiy, called on the Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Asim, today.

At the meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Minister Asim congratulated Ambassador Materiy on his appointment and conveyed that Maldives attaches great importance to its relations with the Russian Federation. Minister Asim expressed hope that with the contribution of the Ambassador, existing bilateral ties between both countries will be further strengthened. Minister Asim and Ambassador Materiy exchanged views on further enhancing cooperation and reflected on ways to strengthen the existing relations, especially in the areas of trade, investment, tourism and other areas of mutual interest.

Foreign Minister Dr. Asim was accompanied by Joint Secretary, Ms. Fathimath Najwa.

The new Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Maldives, H.E. Yuri B. Materiy, presented his credentials to President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom at the President’s Office this morning.

During the call, the President welcomed Ambassador Materiy to the Maldives and congratulated him on his appointment as the new Ambassador of Russia to the Maldives. Noting that this year marks the 51st anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Russia, the President emphasised that the Maldives attaches high importance to its relations with Russia. He expressed hopes for working closely with Ambassador Materiy and the Government of Russia on both bilateral and multilateral fronts, for the common benefit of both countries and their peoples.

Ambassador Materiy conveyed assurances to the President of his full support and commitment to further strengthen existing ties between the Maldives and Russia.

The President was accompanied at the call by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Asim, and the Minister of State for Foreign Relations at the President’s Office, H.E. Mr. Mohamed Naseer.

The Foreign Service Institute of Maldives (FOSIM) has conducted a half-day training on Protocol and Etiquette for the Ministry of Health, as part of its Stakeholder Awareness Programmes.

The training focused on diplomatic protocol, receiving foreign dignitaries, arranging meetings and calls, and the basic etiquettes of protocol officers. Staff from the Protocol Department facilitated the training.

The FOSIM stakeholder awareness series is aimed at strengthening collaboration and ensuring better coordination with other government institutions. Since the establishment of the Foreign Service Institute on 16 January 2014, FOSIM has conducted stakeholder awareness sessions on diplomacy, foreign policy, diplomatic protocol and etiquette training.

His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Asim has arrived in Male’, after his first bilateral official visit to Japan. Minister Asim was visiting Japan on a three-day official visit in connection with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Japan.

During the visit Minister Asim held discussions with his counterpart, His Excellency Mr. Taro Kono, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and reviewed the programme of cooperation between the two countries and agreed to work together to further strengthen the existing cordial relations between Maldives and Japan. Minister Asim paid a courtesy call on the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of Japan, His Excellency Mr. Taro Aso, President of the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Mr. Shinichi Kitaoka, and the President of Japan-Maldives Parliamentarian Friendship League, Honorable Mr. Wataru Takeshita. Minister Asim also met with the  Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan His Excellency Mr. Iwao Horii.

Foreign Minister also participated in a press conference organized by the Japan National Press Club (JNPC), and addressed the Japanese local media on his visit and the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Japan. Minister’s speech was followed by a lively Q&A session with the local media covering bilateral, regional and international issues. In addition, Minister Asim gave an interview to Asahi Shimbun, one of the most respected newspapers in Japan. In his interview, Minister touched on a wide range of issues including development cooperation, tourism promotion, and counter-terrorism as well as regional and international issues.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Asim met with the resident Maldivian Community in Japan, jointly with the members from Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV), at a reception hosted by the Embassy of Maldives to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Japan.

Foreign Minister Asim was accompanied by H. E. Mr. Ahmed Khaleel, Secretary, Bilateral and Mr. Hussain Shareef, Desk Officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Asim met with the President of Japan-Maldives Parliamentarian Friendship League, Honorable Mr. Wataru Takeshita this afternoon.

During the meeting, Minister Asim highlighted the historic relations Maldives and Japan have enjoyed over the past five decades and thanked Japan-Maldives Parliamentarian Friendship League for the crucial role they are playing to enhance the relations between the two countries.

Minister Asim and Hon. Takeshita discussed on strengthening cooperation in various fields including cooperation amongst parliamentarians between the two countries.

Hon. Yoshitaka Shindo, Secretary General and Hon. Yuko Obuchi, General Secretary of the Japan-Maldives Parliamentarian Friendship League also participated in the meeting.

Minister Asim was accompanied by Ambassador Ahmed Khaleel, Secretary Bilateral, Mr. Hussain Shareef, Desk Officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Senior officials at the Embassy of Maldives in Tokyo.

Minister Asim is visiting Japan on a three-day official visit in connection with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Japan.
