His Excellency Harri Kämäräinen, Ambassador of Finland to the Republic of Maldives, called on the Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Abdulla Shahid, today.

At the meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this afternoon, the Minister congratulated the Ambassador on his appointment and discussed ways to further strengthen and enhance the existing bilateral relations between the two countries on priority areas such as upholding rule of law, good governance and cooperation in the fields of informational technology, health, education and environment.

Minister Shahid also conveyed the importance the Government attaches to higher education and expressed the government’s interest in establishing contacts with academic institutions in Finland to seek more opportunities for Maldivian students to study in the country. Ambassador Kämäräinen also expressed the Government of Finland’s readiness in working closely with the Government of Maldives to assist in the priority areas of the Maldives.

Minister Shahid was accompanied by Ms. Aishath Zeeshan Zuhuree, Senior Desk Officer of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His Excellency Ambassador Harri Kämäräinen was accompanied by Mr. Abdulla Saeed, Honorary Consul of Finland to the Maldives.

The Ambassador of the United Kingdom to the Republic of Maldives, His Excellency James Dauris paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Abdulla Shahid, this morning.

During the meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Shahid and Ambassador Dauris discussed issues of bilateral significance and focused on ways to reinforce the longstanding bilateral relations between both countries.

Minister Shahid further expressed Government’s decision to rejoin the Commonwealth and its readiness to play an active role to contribute to and benefit from the Commonwealth. Minister Shahid assured that the Maldives will continue working with the United Kingdom on key areas such as climate change and education.

Minister Shahid was accompanied by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Ahmed Khaleel and Ms. Shiuneen Rasheed, Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Ambassador Dauris was accompanied by Mr. Fergus Auld, Head of South Asia Department at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has appointed Mr. Ahmed Latheef as Ambassador of the Republic of Maldives to the Federal Republic of Germany and Mr. Omar Abdul Razzak as the Ambassador to the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and presented them with the letter of credence at a ceremony held at the President’s Office this afternoon.

The newly appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Maldives to the Federal Republic of Germany, Mr. Ahmed Latheef began his Foreign Service career in 1981 and served at different posts in the area of bilateral and multilateral cooperation. In this regard, Mr. Ahmed Latheef served as the first Ambassador of the Republic of Maldives to the Republic of China in 2007 and held tenure for 5 consecutive years. The last post he served before the ambassadorship was as the Director General of Transition appointed by the President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

The Ambassador to the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka Mr. Omar Abdul Razzak completed Masters of Business Administration (International) from Edith Cowen University of Australia. Previous work experience of Mr. Omar Abdul Razzak includes the post of Minister of States for Home Affairs, Project Monitoring at the Ministry of Finance and Treasury where he was responsible for monitoring the development of all projects in the country funded through external sources and as the Shadow Foreign Secretary of Maldives United Opposition. He is currently also a member of the Joint Opposition Foreign Relations Committee.

The newly appointed Ambassador of Switzerland to the Maldives, His Excellency Hanspeter Mock, called on the Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Abdulla Shahid, today.

At the meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this afternoon, Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid congratulated Ambassador Mock on his appointment as the Ambassador of Switzerland to the Maldives.

Foreign Minister Shahid also expressed hope that the bilateral ties and cooperation between both Maldives and Switzerland will be strengthened during Ambassador Mock’s tenure.

The newly appointed Ambassador of Finland to the Maldives, His Excellency, Mr. Harri Kämäräinen, presented his Letter of Credence to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih this morning, at a ceremony held to mark the occasion, at The President’s Office. 

During the subsequent call, President Solih welcomed Ambassador Kämäräinen to the Maldives and congratulated him on his appointment. He expressed his appreciation for the warm and friendly sentiments that continue to underscore bilateral ties between the Maldives and Finland, and hope that these positive relations will continue to prosper into the future. 

The Ambassador congratulated President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on his electoral victory, and reiterated the President’s remarks with regard to  increasing cooperation between our two governments. 

He particularly noted the Maldives’ positive regard towards the Finnish education system, which is widely acknowledged to be of exceptionally high quality. The Ambassador emphasized his Government’s willingness to provide the Maldives with assistance to strengthen our own education system; and to help the Maldives make progress in various other areas, including the development of clean technology, and digital healthcare. 

Concluding the call Ambassador Kämäräinen reiterated his well wishes towards the President and the people of Maldives.
