The first Ambassador of the Republic of Kosovo to the Republic of Maldives, His Excellency Dr. Rexhep Boja, called on the Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Asim.

At the meeting held at the Foreign Ministry this afternoon, Minister Asim congratulated Dr. Boja on his appointment and exchanged ideas in enhancing cooperation between both countries and reflected on ways for strengthening the existing ties, especially in areas such as tourism, trade and education.

Foreign Minister Asim was accompanied by His Excellency Ahmed Khaleel, Secretary, Bilateral and Assistant Directors Ms. Shiuneen Rasheed and Ms. Moomina Ibrahim.

The Government of Japan donated medical equipments worth 66 million Japanese Yen, which is equivalent to approximately 9.2 million Maldivian Rufiyaa, to the Government of Maldives today.  The medical equipment would be utilized in regional hospitals and in selected health facilities of the Maldives.

The aid was presented to His Excellency Mr. Abdulla Nazim, Minister of Health by His Excellency Mr. Kazumi Endo, Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives at a handing over ceremony held at the Ministry of Health this morning. The medical equipment is donated under Japanese Non-Project Grant Aid.

 

This year we marks the fiftieth anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic ties between the Maldives and Japan. Japan has been one of the biggest bilateral development partners of the Maldives. From human resources development to environmental protection, sustainable fisheries to communication and humanitarian, and reconstruction assistance in the aftermath of the tsunami in 2004, Japanese assistance has now virtually reached all corners of the Maldivian archipelago.

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has this afternoon, departed on an official visit to Saudi Arabia, on an invitation by the King of Saudi Arabia, His Majesty King Salmaan Bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud to participate in the “Arab Islamic American Summit”, scheduled to be held in Riyadh on 21st May 2017.

The aim of the summit is to establish an Arab Islamic-American Alliance in the fight against terrorism. The attendees of this summit include Arab and Islamic Leaders, and the President of the United States, H.E. Donald Trump.

The President is accompanied on this trip by Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Asim, Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Shainee and Minister of State at the President’s Office, H.E. Mohamed Naseer.

President Yameen is set to Address at the summit on the evening of 21st May 2017.

 President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has today ratified the ‎7th ‎Amendment to the Decentralisation Act (Act No. 7/2010).‎ The Amendment was passed by the Parliament at the 13th ‎sitting of its ‎first session, on 12th April 2017. Following ratification, the ‎bill has been ‎published in the Government Gazette.

Pursuant to the amendments, the Local Government Authority (LGA) will run under a board of 5 members comprising of; a Cabinet member assigned by the President, who is answerable to the Parliament on behalf of the LGA, a female member who is experienced in the field of Gender Equality, a member from a civil association, a member who is experienced in the field of governance and public administration and the Chief Executive Officer of the LGA

The amendment dismisses the current board members effective immediately and opens up applications for the board. The application form will be available from the President’s Office website.

The Foreign Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs of India, H.E. Dr. S. Jaishankar, paid a courtesy call on President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, this morning, at the President’s Office.

At the ceremony, the President welcomed the Foreign Secretary to the Maldives and conveyed good wishes to the President of India, H.E. Pranab Mukherjee and the Prime Minister of India, H.E. Narendra Modi.

During the call, the President expressed sincere appreciation for the continued support and assistance provided by the Government of India. President also expressed his firm commitment to further elevate existing relations through different avenues of cooperation. In this regard, the President noted that commercial relations between the two countries would further enhance the greater economic cooperation and development. Additionally, the President expressed confidence in the Foreign Secretary’s visit to the Maldives, which would expedite the implementation of the different areas of cooperation between Maldives and India.

The Foreign Secretary thanked the President for receiving him and expressed pleasure for the opportunity to meet with the President. The Foreign Secretary also conveyed the good wishes to the President from the President and the Prime Minister of India, and assured that India will continue to assist and collaborate with the Maldives to enhance the ties of friendship and cooperation between the two countries. The Foreign Secretary further discussed opportunities for commercial investments in the Maldives.
The President was accompanied at the call by the Minister of State for Foreign Relations at the President’s Office, H.E Mr. Mohamed Naseer and the Foreign Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and H.E. Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed.
