The Ambassador of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh H.E. Rear Admiral Akhtar Habib, has paid a courtesy call on Vice President Faisal Naseem, this morning at the President’s Office.

During the call, the Vice President welcomed the Ambassador and expressed good wishes from the Government and the people of Maldives to the Government and the people of Bangladesh.

Emphasizing on the strong bilateral ties that exist between the Maldives and Bangladesh, The Vice President and the Bangladeshi Ambassador expressed interests to further strengthen the existing relations and to work together to enhance collaborations in areas that are of mutual benefit to both countries. The Government of the Maldives warmly welcomes the announcement by the Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom, Rt. Honourable Jeremy Hunt MP, this afternoon at the House of Commons that the United Kingdom has decided to open a resident diplomatic mission in the Maldives.This decision signifies the importance the United Kingdom attaches to its longstanding ties of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

The opening of a resident mission by the British Government marks a significant milestone in the relationship between the two countries that would undoubtedly open up enhanced opportunities for education, trade, tourism and investment for both countries. Read more

His Excellency Kentaro Sonoura, Adviser to the Prime Minister of Japan, who is on a one-day official visit to the Maldives, called on His Excellency Abdulla Shahid, Minister of Foreign Affairs, this morning.

During the meeting, Minister Shahid noted that since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1967, Maldives and Japan have enjoyed a dynamic relationship, anchored on mutual trust, understanding and respect, and that Mr. Sonoura’s visit to the Maldives so early in the administration of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih signifies the importance that Japan attaches to furthering its relationship with the Maldives. Minister Shahid further expressed hope that this visit is the beginning of more high level exchange of visits between the two countries in the months to come. Read more

The Government of the Republic of Maldives and the Government of Japan, with a view to further developing friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries, signed an Exchange of Notes this morning.

At the ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Abdulla Shahid, Minister of Foreign Affairs and His Excellency Kazumi Endo, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Maldives, signed the Exchange of Notes on behalf of the two respective countries. The signing ceremony was also witnessed by His Excellency Kentaro Sonoura, Special Advisor of the Prime Minister of Japan, who is on a one-day official visit to the Maldives. Read more
