In response to a query from a journalist about America’s concern on the increasing influence of China and growing radicalism in the Maldives, Maldives Ambassador to India Ahmed Mohamed told The Hindu in Delhi  ” allegations that the Yameen government was undemocratic were “sensational” and represented a “western double standard”. “We have said other countries must not be prescriptive or interfere in our affairs,”

His Excellency, Mr. Ahmed Mohamed, the Maldives Ambassador to India, met with leaders from the travel and holidays fraternity at the embassy. They had a preliminary brainstorming session to explore new and innovative opportunities to increase tourism inflow to the Maldives from India. Also discussed were possibilities of having direct flights from North Indian cities to Maldives.

 

 

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom inaugurated the “Dhaalu Airport” in Kudahuvadhoo Island.

The Dhaalu Airport was developed with a runway of 1800 meters. A land area of 62 hectares was reclaimed for the airport development project.

The visiting delegation of the European Parliament calls on the Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohamed Asim.

In the meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this morning,  discussions were held on important aspects of the EU-Maldives relations, especially in the areas of environment and climate change, counter terrorism and violent extremism, socio-economic development, strengthening governance and democratic framework. An exchange of views was also held on progress of on-going initiatives under the EU-Maldives cooperation, such as the collaboration on Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fisheries Policy and the EU Election Observer mission.

The meeting was attended by three Members of the European Parliament, Ms. Jean Lambert, Chair of the Delegation, Mr. Richard Corbett, Vice-Chair of the Delegation and Ms. Ulrike Müller. The MEPs were accompanied by officials from the Secretariat of the European Parliament and officials from the Delegation of the European Union Delegation to Sri Lanka and Maldives.

Minister Asim was accompanied by Mr. Ahmed Sareer, Foreign Secretary, Mr. Ahmed Khaleel, Secretary Bilateral, Ms. Fathimath Najwa, Joint Secretary and Mr. Mohamed Shujau, Desk Officer.

During the three-day visit, in addition to meetings with key figures of the Government of the Maldives, the delegation will also visit Addu Atoll to see progress of the Climate Change Adaptation Project (CCAP) in Addu City and Fuvahmulah, which is a project fully funded by EU, administered by the World Bank and implemented by the Ministry of Environment and Energy.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Asim has called on the Prime Minister of Lebanon, H.E. Mr. Saad Hariri.

During the meeting, PM Hariri and Minister Asim discussed on bilateral areas of cooperation between the Maldives and Lebanon. Minister Asim briefed Prime Minister on the rapid economic development strides Maldives has achieved under the initiative of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and in this regard, mentioned that the Maldives would welcome potential investments from Lebanon. Minister Asim also informed the advocacy role Maldives plays as Chair of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), in addressing climate change impacts on small island states like the Maldives. Prime Minister Hariri and Minister Asim pledged their commitment to work closely both in bilateral and multilateral arena.

Minister Asim is in Lebanon on an official visit. This is his first official visit to Lebanon since he assumed office. He was accompanied by Ms. Samahath Zuhuree, Assistant Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Asim also paid a courtesy call on President of the Lebanon Parliament, H.E. Mr. Nabih Berri.

He made the courtesy call during his official visit to Lebanon. Minister Asim was accompanied by Ms. Samahath Zuhuree, Assistant Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

 

 

Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Asim  met the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants of Lebanon, H.E. Mr. Gebran Bassil.

During this meeting, Minister Asim reaffirmed the close friendly relations between the Maldives and Lebanon and explored various areas of cooperation between both the countries.

The Maldives established diplomatic relations with Lebanon on 25 February 1988. Minister Asim is in Lebanon on an official visit. He was accompanied by Ms. Samahath Zuhuree, Assistant Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
